Gerhard 'Gerry' Friedle (born 7 January 1971) is an Austrian entertainer and singer, better known by his stage name DJ Ötzi (pronounced [ˈdiːdʒɛɪ ˈœtsiː]).[1] Successful mainly in German-speaking countries, he is best known in the English-speaking world for his 2000 single 'Hey Baby (Uhh, Ahh)', a cover version of the Bruce Channel song 'Hey! Baby'. His stage name comes from Ötzi the Iceman, the name given to the 5,300-year-old frozen remains of a mummified man discovered in 1991 in South Tyrol's Ötztal Alps.

Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

DJ Ötzi was born as Gerhard Friedle in St. Johann, Tirol, and is the son of DJ Anton Friedle.[1] Shortly after birth, his mother, age 17-years at the time, gave him up for adoption.[1] He was raised by foster parents and later by his paternal grandparents in the nearby village of Erpfendorf in Tirol.[1] At a young age he suffered from epilepsy, at age 16, his avulsion from home, landed him for a short time homelessness living on the streets.[1] His career arose gradually, first working as a student cook, then on being discovered at a karaoke competition, went on to work as an entertainer (animateur), disc jockey and singer in discothèques around Austria, as well as tourist destinations Majorca and Turkey. Since childhood, he has endured several setbacks in his life, which continued in recent years with doctors diagnosing testicular cancer, that he defeated, only to be confronted in 2002, before the birth of his daughter, with a severe form of conductive hearing loss.[1][2]

Musical career[edit]

Debut album and early success[edit]

In 1999, he was featured on the single, 'Anton aus Tirol' by Anton. The song was a massive hit in German-speaking countries, reaching number-one in Austria and Germany, while it peaked at number two in Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. The song spent 75 weeks in the Austrian charts and was number-one for ten weeks. The success of this single propelled the release of the Anton (feat. Dj. Ötzi) album, Das Album in 2000.

Second album and international recognition[edit]

In July 2000, he released a cover version of Bruce Channel's 1962 song 'Hey Baby'. This single reached number-one in several English-speaking countries, including Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom. He followed up this release with a cover version of 'Do Wah Diddy'.

Continued success[edit]

In 2003, he released a cover version of 'A Ram Sam Sam', called the 'Burger Dance', which reached number-one in Germany, number 3 in Austria and number 7 in Switzerland.

In 2006, he found success with the Volksmusik-hit 'Sieben Sünden', which became a number 2 hit in Austria and 'I Am the Music Man' under the pseudonym DJ Ötzi Junior, which reached number-one in Japan.

In 2007, he released 'Ein Stern (..der deinen Namen trägt)' with Austrian schlager singer Nik P. It reached number one in Germany where it stayed for 13 weeks and Austria, number 2 in Switzerland, and number 5 in the European Union, despite the fact that at the time of its release, some of the most popular radio stations in Austria and Germany declined to play the song because its genre did not fit their programme style. The single has sold more than 2 million copies.[3] Spending 106 weeks on the German Singles Chart, it is the first song to be on that chart for two years or longer, and the longest running song ever on that chart.[4]

Lou Bega's cover was a hit in the United Kingdom,[2] and Australia, where it reached number-one in 1999. It stayed at number-one in Australia for eight weeks, ultimately becoming the best-selling single of 1999.[3] It also topped almost every chart in continental Europe, including Bega's home country, Germany, and set a record by staying at number-one in France for 20 weeks (longer than any stay at the top spot ever on the US or UK charts). The song reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US on November 2, 1999, giving Bega his only Top 40 hit in the US.[4]

Music video

The music video, directed by Jorn Heitmann, features Lou Bega singing and dancing with flappers, possibly a homage to the music of the 1920s and 1930s. The video includes clips of old-style movies and newsreels showing trumpets, big bands and the like. The Disney version of the music video features Lou Bega performing against a white background with a live band, and the women's names are replaced with names of classic Disney characters. Footage of old Mickey Mouse cartoons and clips of Lou Bega performing against a checkered background is intercut throughout the video.

Other cover versions

  • CKBE-FMDavid Tyler 1999.
  • A Bob the Builder version of the song, with the female names replaced with types of construction supplies and building tasks (timber, saw, waterproofing, tiling) reached number one in the UK, number two in Australia and number four in Ireland in 2001.[18]
  • A ninety-second cover version was created for the Korean rhythm dance game Pump It Up.
  • A cover of the original Perez Prado version appeared in Guinness's famous 1998 'Swimblack' advertisement.
  • Max Raabe backed by the Palast Orchester included a vintage arrangement version of the song on their 2001 Superhits album.[50]
  • Filipino jazz singer Richard Poon covered the song on the Filipino compilation album 90's Music Comes Alive in 2012.
  • Cover versions, with slightly different lyrics in each version, have been heard in Party City commercials.
  • Dutch children's TV character Ome Henk, took a parody of the song to #9 titled 'Mambo Nr 6'. The lyrics referred to a medicine prescribed to him, which causes hallucinations of the girls he mentions in the song. A parody of commercials for the fictional product is also heard.

Parodies

  • WHTZ DJ David Brody released a parody version named 'Matzah No. 5' which aired on radio stations throughout the country. Performed by 'Louie Bagel', the parody takes on various Jewish stereotypes. He also released a parody entitled 'Bimbo No. 5'[51] referring to the Monica Lewinsky scandal, wherein DJ Nelson imitates the voice of Bill Clinton. The song is commonly mis-attributed to both 'Weird Al' Yankovic and Paul Shanklin. Also released was 'Combo No.5'; the parody takes on ordering combo dinners from a Chinese take-away.

Legacy

  • The original recording by Pérez Prado was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.[52]
  • 'Mambo No. 5' was ranked sixth in a 2007 poll conducted by Rolling Stone to identify the 20 most annoying songs.[53]
  • This song was initially selected as the theme song of the 2000 Democratic National Convention, but this plan was scrapped due to the possibility of people associating the song with the Monica Lewinsky scandal.[54]
  • KalyeSerye's Tinidora (played by Jose Manalo) usually dances to this music, with matching ladders, chairs and sometimes, rooftops.
